Outstanding Work at Toronto Pearson Airport
By Ramakrishna Malkapuram, Service Delivery Manager
I would like to formally recognize two of our outstanding employees Kashmir Sophal and Maria Estrella for their vigilance, professionalism, and teamwork during a critical incident on March 24, 2025.
On the morning of March 24, 2025, Security Officers Kashmir Sophal and Maria Estrella demonstrated exceptional vigilance and teamwork in responding to a potentially dangerous situation involving a lost child. At approximately 8:31 AM, Kashmir observed a young child, estimated to be around 2 to 3 years old, walking alone from a restricted area (G214 backflow) toward the public side. Recognizing the urgency, Kashmir promptly alerted Maria, who was stationed at the temporary pass post at G214 and attempted to stop the child from proceeding further. Their swift coordination ensured the child’s safety while emergency support was contacted.
Maria played a crucial role in keeping the child calm and safe while waiting for assistance. Understanding the child was distressed and unwilling to remain still, she used an iLobby iPad to gently engage and comfort them. Thanks to their quick thinking and composed handling of the situation, a safety security officer and a police officer were able to take over at approximately 8:40 AM. The professionalism and care shown by both guards reflect their strong commitment to safety and their ability to respond effectively under pressure.
We extend our sincere appreciation to our out standing employees Sophal Kashmir and Estrella for their exemplary conduct and service.

Maria Estrella
Maria’s incredible journey at Toronto Pearson International Airport is a testament to dedication, resilience, and service excellence. She began her aviation career in 1997 with Group Transat (now Air Transat) as a station attendant and customer service agent, where she served until 2000. That same year, she transitioned into her role as an Airport Control Officer, a role she held until 2008. Simultaneously, from 2000 to 2006, Maria also worked as a customer service agent at the Maple Leaf Lounge with Air Canada, showcasing her ability to balance multiple responsibilities with professionalism and grace.
In 2008, when ASP took over the security contract at Pearson, Maria continued her role as an ACO and has remained a valued team member ever since. Her commitment to safety and care was formally recognized in 2008 when she received a tribute of gratitude from the Greater Toronto Airports Authority for her courageous actions in helping a young girl in danger. Maria’s long- standing service and unwavering dedication make her a shining example of the spirit and strength that keep Toronto Pearson running smoothly every day.
