Every year, many employees suffer injury as a result of a slip or trip at work.

Over the last 10 years, the number of slip- related accidents has been increasing. It is important to remember that safety is everyone’s responsibility.

YOU can reduce the risk of slipping or falling by:

  • Wearing appropriate foot wear.
  • Immediately calling IOCC Non-Emergency for all spills.
  • Call Snow Removal Desk if snow/ice builds up at airside post.
  • Taking your time and paying attention to where you are going.
  • Walking with the feet pointed slightly outward.
  • Ensuring that things you are carrying or pushing do not prevent you from seeing.

A positive attitude towards health and safety can prevent most slips and trips. A ‘see it, sort it’ attitude is always best. The opposite of this is an attitude whereby people leave things they see. Just because one person sees something and is able to avoid an accident, doesn’t mean that everyone else will be able to do the same.

By taking simple precautions, the risk of personal injury from a slip, trip or fall at work can be greatly reduced.

Teamwork…it plays a critical role in building and sustaining successful businesses and work environments.

Our team continues to grow and it is important that we continue to welcome new team members and assist them in adapting to their new company and with being successful in their new role.

“Great things in business are never done by one person; they’re done by a team of people.” – Steve Jobs

Our team collaboration and growth over the last several months has resulted in many new employees in Ontario and Alberta. It is exciting to see the newly created teams continue to develop and reflect our ASP values and culture.

The entire ASP team is responsible for our recent successes and we should all be proud. For us to continue to grow, we have to make sure that we continue to work together effectively and support each other in our various roles within the organization.

“Our destiny is not written for us, it’s written by us” — Barack Obama

How can we improve teamwork at your work location? How can you assist? Do you have any recommendations for team building activities that we can consider to implement?

I am interested in hearing back from our employees; email me your ideas/comments on “Teamwork” at jcatney@security-asp.com.

ASP would like to welcome Tom Lawson to the ASP Family. Tom will be joining ASP as our Strategic Advisor.

General Thomas James Lawson CD2, CMM, MEng, MPA, ICD is a retired Royal Canadian Air Force general. Lawson was Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) of the Canadian Armed Forces from October 2012 to July 2015. He previously served as Deputy Commander of the North American Aerospace Defence Command.

As a member of perhaps our nation’s only four- generation Royal Canadian Air Force family, General Lawson looks back on his 40-year military career with deep appreciation. It allowed him to recognize the critical importance of developing leadership qualities within organizations. He especially credits his time as CDS in command of the Canadian Armed Forces as a key opportunity to broaden and hone his strategic visioning skills.

We are now in full swing with the iSpring Learning Management System (LMS).

Although there is already a vast amount of learning content available, we are just getting started. There will be many more developments coming in 2019.

Once you complete a module or learning path, it will move from the “To Do” list to the “Completed” list within the options menu.

The goal of every employee is to clear the “To Do” list.

The iSpring mobile app makes it easier than ever to disseminate information so you are never out of the loop.

If you know of any learning content that may benefit your team, let’s have a discussion. I am more than happy to work with any team member to develop training modules to enhance the quality of our service. Feel free to provide feedback, as I depend on your input for improvement.

Please contact me at if you are having any difficulties logging in to iSpring.

The following is a summary of what is currently available on iSpring:

The uniform is a very important part of ASP.

It sets our employees apart from the general public as an individual in a position of authority. Despite its aesthetic advantages, the real benefit of the uniform goes beyond outward appearance.

Benefits of our uniforms:

  1. Instant Recognition. In an emergency situation, you don’t want to waste time looking around for someone who can help.
If there’s a uniformed guard on hand, the decision is made for you, and you instantly recognize the person to alert.
  2. Peace of mind for employees and customers. When uniformed guards are on site, employees and customers are aware and reassured by their presence.
The sight of a well-presented uniform is calming and provides reassurance.
  3. Deterrence of crimes. A guard in uniform on location provides a strong deterrent to would-be criminals.
  4. Sense of pride and belonging. When guards put on their uniform, they are able to feel a sense of pride in their own presentation, and also in their affiliation with a company that has an established and strong reputation. Many guards are proud to be a part of the organization and wear the uniform with pride. It identifies them as part of a team of experienced professionals.
  5. Professionalism. When a visitor sees a security guard on duty, their immediate thought isn’t that a third-party security company has been engaged to protect the premises.
  6. Most people will subconsciously assume that the guard is an employee or direct affiliate of whatever the guard protects – our clients. This makes presentation and professionalism of the utmost importance.

It is clear the uniform provides many benefits, not only in the form of presentation, but also for logical, practical reasons.

The employees trained by ASP are always proud of their presentation; they go above and beyond in their efforts to maintain a high-level of professionalism.

I don’t know about you, but I love enjoying my free time around the city with friends and family, and I hope to share some of my favourite spots.

Congratulations to all 2018 award-winners!

Employees, as we wind down 2018 and look forward to 2019, we remind you that if you
reached the maximum contribution for the EI and CPP deductions, they will appear again in the first payroll runs of 2019.

Make sure to plan for this slight drop in the net pay.

The team would like to express our extreme gratitude to all employees for your patience as we moved to the new payroll system in May and ironed out the initial issues following the deployment.

If you have suggestions about the paystub, please send us an email ataspaccounting@security-asp.com and we’ll take them into consideration.

There will be one more change to the scheduling system. We will be moving to a pay period that starts on a Sunday at 00:00 and ends on a Saturday at 23:59.

Previously, if you started the shift on the Saturday night

and it ended on the Sunday, you would be paid for the whole shift on the pay
period. Moving forward, that shift will be split at midnight between theSaturday and Sunday and the hours worked will be paid in the pay period that they were worked. For example, if you started Saturday at 22:00 and worked until Sunday at 08:00, you will now have 2 hours (22:00-24:00) in the one pay period and 8 hours (00:00-08:00) in the next.

We’re doing this to streamline the processing of payroll and reduce errors that occur on statutory days.

In closing, thank you for all the hard work and efforts put in by all employees to make ASP the success that we are today.

Enjoy the holidays!
