Position Summary
Airport Access Control Security Guards are responsible for controlling access and preventing unauthorized access of persons and vehicles at designated restricted area access control and Non-Passenger Screening posts/positions in a professional, competent and courteous manner. It is vital that security services at the Airport are provided in a manner that ensures integrity through professionalism and diligence, while keeping the customer and Airport users’ needs at the forefront.
Access control guards must instill a strong sense of safety and security amongst all airport stakeholders and as this position is an Ambassador of the Airport they must make every interaction with airport employees and the travelling public a professional and positive experience.
This is accomplished by:
- challenging and confirming the need and right of entry of individuals;
- validating and verifying RAIC, Temporary Passes & other documents of entitlement;
- Inspecting vehicles accessing airside and verifying the number and identification of occupants;
- verifying deliveries of goods and ensuring compliance with the material movement program; and
- recording hourly notations in the Post Log Book.
Guards are only to take direction from the ASP Shift Leads and, when required, from the Airport Authority Representative or Designate;
Primary Duties
- Provide Access Control services at designated Terminal, Airside and NPS-V Access points;
- Maintain vigilance, situational awareness and alertness of surroundings while focusing on Post duties and ensure that only authorized entry to the restricted area is permitted;
- Acts as an ambassador of the Airport Authority by assisting public with various queries and by being proactive in offering assistance to curious or confused persons – without leaving Post;
- Report all persons with expired, tampered with, confiscated, invalid, or damaged passes or keycards to SOC/IOC;
- Immediately report all known or suspected safety concerns, security breaches, criminal offenses, suspicious activities, unattended items, etc. to the SOC/IOC and Shift Lead and confirm the details, while maintaining visual surveillance pending arrival of security patrol or police;
- Note and report facility deficiencies to the IOC (equipment failure, lighting problems, safety hazards, etc.);
- Document and report all complaints, problems, incidents, events, activities, deficiencies or concerns and inform the Shift Lead as soon as possible and prior to end of shift;
- Assist during emergency incidents, i.e. by immediately notifying the SOC/IOC in the event of an emergency, by providing direction from Post during an evacuation of building, etc.;
- Maintain notebooks and complete daily logs which detail activities, events, reports, etc.;
- Implement enhanced security measures and safety protocol as directed;
- Complete other associated duties (e.g. surveys, implementation of enhanced Security Measures etc.) as may be assigned from time to time;
- (Airside only) Inspect vehicles and examine vehicle occupants and contents prior to entry.
Position Requirements
Education and Experience
- Minimum High School diploma or GED equivalent;
- Minimum of one (1) year verifiable experience in a security field or any equivalent combination of experience and education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved;
Qualifications
All applicants for this position must be:
- 21 years of age or older
- A Canadian Citizen or Landed Immigrant
- Have a clear Criminal Record
- Licensed by the Province of Alberta as a registered Security Guard;
- Able to obtain and maintain a valid Transportation Security Clearance and a Calgary Airport Restricted Area Identity Card (RAIC);
- Physically capable of performing all duties as set out in Job/Position Description
- Able to work a rotating 24/7 shift schedule, including nights weekends and holidays;
- Successful completion of all required training/certification courses, including the initial and annual recurrent Access Control Guard Training/Certification, post specific OJT and practical training in radio procedures, usage and communications is a pre-requisite for employment;
- Pre-employment references will be required prior to consideration for employment;

- Excellent written and verbal communication and active listening skills;
- Proficient computer skills including proficiency in MS office applications; with the ability to produce documents, send and receive emails;
- High level of attention to detail and security/situational awareness and ability to identify unusual or suspicious situations/events and critical issues quickly and accurately;
- Agile, vigilant and able to detect problems, react quickly and take appropriate action;
- Adaptable/flexible with the ability to work under pressure and multi-task in a fast paced, agile, fluctuating and demanding work environment;
- Resourceful, results driven, detail oriented with a strong desire to be part of a new start-up security/customer-centric team in;
- Demonstrates a high level of dependability, honesty, enthusiasm and integrity and exhibits a professional, positive and courteous manner at all times;
- Basic surveillance/observation/information gathering/investigation and report writing skills;
Recruitment Assets:
- Airport security and/or operations experience is highly desirable;
- Possession of a valid Transportation Security Clearance and a Calgary Airport Restricted Area Identity Card (RAIC) is an asset for this position;
